Leather Collar Care - Click to Open
Hand-cut, hand-stitched, and finished using traditional leatherwork techniques — these collars are designed to age beautifully when cared for, so here are some tips to make your accessories last longer
- Rest when possible
Give your dog a break from their collar when they’re safe indoors or relaxing. Store the collar somewhere cool and dry, away from direct sunlight.
- Check regularly.
It's important to regularly check your dogs collar over for any signs of excessive wear or damage, take the collar off and inspect the stitching, hardware, and underside. Brush away any dirt or hair caught in the folds.
- Wet walkies.
If your dog is heading for a swim or muddy adventure, swap the leather collar for an all-weather one. If it does get wet, blot with a towel and let it air dry naturally. Never force dry leather with harsh heat as it drys it out
- Condition occasionally.
A small amount of leather balm or conditioner, applied every few months, will keep the leather supple and help prevent cracking. This can be applied to the underside first to make sure it reacts how you would like with the leather.
- Clean gently
Wipe with a soft, damp cloth after walks. For heavier dirt, use a lightly dampened sponge with mild soap, then dry thoroughly (as mentioned above)
- Expect natural character
Leather develops a patina with age — scratches, softening, and colour shifts are signs of a well-loved piece, not faults. Embrace the beauty of the process
Remember our recycle and reuse scheme, over time collars do need replacement but there is no need to throw away the solid brass hardware, we can reuse this to make your pups next collar and save you 30% in the process. Click here to find out more.
Pro Care Tip: Apply a touch of leather balm just before storing the collar overnight — the warmth of your home helps the leather absorb it beautifully.
All Weather Collar Care - Click to open
Designed for adventurous dogs who love mud, rain, and rivers — our all-weather collars are waterproof, easy to clean, and built for daily use.
- Rinse after adventures
After muddy walks or swims, run the collar under warm water. This prevents grit and dirt from building up in the surface texture.
- Mild soap for stubborn dirt
A little dish soap or gentle hand soap will lift grease or heavier marks. Wipe with a sponge, then rinse clean. Our lighter colours can need cleaning more often
- Quick dry
Pat down with a towel or hang to air dry — Biothane®️ won’t absorb water, so it’s ready to go again within minutes.
- Wipe metal hardware
Drying the buckle or fittings after wet walks helps prevent tarnish and keeps them looking sharp. The brass hardware can rub off onto collars and mark them. This can be scrubbed off with a little a little soap as mentioned before and it is just a natural way that brass ages.
- Rotate if used daily
If your dog wears their collar constantly, consider having a second to rotate — it extends the life of both and gives you time to clean one while using the other.
- Regular once-over
Check the hardware and strap every so often for signs of wear, especially if your dog pulls strongly on the lead. Its important to regularly check your dogs collar over for any signs of excessive wear or damage, take the collar off and inspect the stitching, hardware, and underside. Brush away any dirt or hair caught in the folds. Biothane can crack after very long periods of wear, however it is made with an internal woven core so does not mean the collar will break.
Pro Care Tip: Keep a soft cloth by the door — a quick wipe-down as you come in from a walk keeps the collar looking fresh with almost no effort.
Please note: our collars and leads are handmade to a very high standard, but all natural and synthetic materials will show signs of wear over time. Regular care checks are the best way to keep both your collar and your dog safe. We cannot accept responsibility for damage caused by general use or natural ageing.
Collar Care FAQs
Can my dog wear their collar 24/7?
We recommend removing collars overnight or when your dog is resting at home. It prevents rubbing, gives the coat a break, and helps the collar last longer.
Which collar is best for swimming?
For water-loving dogs, our Biothane®️ all-weather collars are the best choice.
Do the collars soften with age?
Leather collars will soften and develop a rich patina over time — this is part of their beauty. Biothane®️ collars hold their shape and finish with minimal change.
What if the collar gets damaged?
Everyday knocks and marks are natural and don’t affect the strength of the collar. Regular checks are the best way to spot early signs of wear. Please note, we cannot offer repair or replacement for damage that comes from general use.
We also offer our Recycle and reuse scheme which helps reduce waste by reusing your collars hardware.
